Interview with Marcella Palazzo, the owner of Mood & Moves Dance Company in San Francisco.

Tell us about yourself! Where are you from? What do you like? Personality…

“I am a 24 year old San Francisco native! Outside of dance I am a bit of a homebody and like to spend time in nature, reading, or at the local coffee shop. I would describe myself as a creative person as I also like drawing, photography, and interior design!”

What do people mainly know you for ?

“People mainly know me for my sassy and burlesquey style choreography!”

How did the studio all came about and who else is involved?

“My dad owns a car repair shop in San Francisco, and used to rent out the office space above it until it became available in 2020. At the time I was finishing up majoring in dance at college, and saw that space as a great opportunity to open my own studio. I jumped at the chance and turned that space into a gorgeous studio, my life hasn’t been the same since!”

What goals are you pursuing for yourself and the studio right now ?

“At the moment my main goal is to keep growing the studio as a creative space for artists of all kinds for rehearsals, video shoots, workshops, and more. The goal is for Mood to become San Francisco’s go to rental space for maybe even celebrities to rehearse one day! I also am working on growing my community of students in my classes and private lessons as I LOVE teaching.’’

Who or what has made the most influence in your life ?

“My parents probably had the biggest influence in my life. When I was little my parents never forced me into sports, classes, or anything I didn’t want to do. They just let me be myself. I remember just playing for hours when I was a kid and I think it helped my imagination and creativity develop strongly.”

How do you overcome a lack of motivation in life?

“Whenever I’m feeling unmotivated I allow myself to take a break. I never try to force things, if I’m feeling tired I probably am. During my break I usually get inspired/motivated and that’s how I know it’s time to go back”

Where do you see yourself and the studio in 5 years ?

“I see myself with fuller classes of students and a booked studio in 5 years. I hope my studio can become a San Francisco staple by then!”

Tell us a little about your main craft or career and why you so passionate about it !

“Out of everything I enjoy choreographing the most! I love seeing my vision come to life on dancers. When I hear music I can visualize the choreography, the lights, the costumes, everything. So when I get to put it into action it’s the best thing ever. My choreographic process is imagine first, steps last. Once I have the idea, I come up with steps that fit the mood. It’s my way of expressing myself to the world.”

What are your proudest accomplishments personally and for the studio ?

“Personally I am proud of myself being able to do this all on my own without any prior business experience. In school I studied dance and anatomy, but the business side I learned through trial and error. It’s not easy but I never give up

For the studio I am proud of the quality of service and community we offer. I along with every instructor here always give a 5 star service to every single customer, and creates a safe space for students to dance”

You are celebrating 3 years anniversary of the studio , tell us a little about that !

“Man these 3 years have been a roller coaster! We opened during the 2020 pandemic and dealt with social distancing, masks, virtual classes, vaccination checks, all that. Navigating COVID along with navigating a new studio was beyond tough. There was a moment where we almost didn’t make it through, but the universe knew what to do. In these 3 years I learned so much about business, what works for the studio/what doesn’t, how I want my brand to be represented, and so much more. I feel like this third year feels most authentic.

How many members does the studio have ? And how come someone join or possibly rent ?

“Every week I teach my Mood & Moves Heels Class, and every month we offer various pop up classes with different instructors. Anyone can join these classes by signing up on our website! The studio is also available 7 days a week for rentals which can be booked on our website as well. The studio can be rented for classes, workshops, rehearsals, photoshoots, auditions, videoshoots, and more.”

Do you have any last words for your followers or anything you want to say ?

“I am super grateful to this platform for allowing me to share my craft and appreciate everyone who shows MOOD love!!”
